Sufficiency in Action: Scaling Down to Scale Up – From Policy to Practice

Date of event: 5 june 2025

Event schedule: 5:30-7pm, followed by a reception 7-8pm

Location: Sciences Po Paris, 1 place Saint-Thomas d’Aquin, room K011

In the face of deepening ecological and social challenges, sufficiency is moving from the margins to the heart of policy conversations. Join us for a high-level roundtable exploring how sufficiency can drive transformative change across Europe and beyond.

Amid escalating climate and resource crises, sufficiency – avoiding the use of resources through intentional, equitable change – has emerged as a strategic priority. This roundtable brings together key actors advancing sufficiency at the European, national, municipal, academic, and civil society levels. From the European Economic and Social Committee to grassroots innovations in the social and solidarity economy, the panel explores how sufficiency can be translated into public policy, urban practices, and social transformation. Speakers will reflect on the mechanisms, levers, tensions, opportunities, and pathways for embedding sufficiency into decision-making and collective action.

Speakers:

  • Yvan Verougstraete, Member of European Parliament
  • Olga Givernet, Member of the French National Assembly
  • Diane Simiu, Director at the French Ministry for the Ecological Transition
  • Dan Lert, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of Ecological Transition
  • Benoît Hamon, President of ESS France (To Be Confirmed)
  • Dr. Yamina Saheb, Lecturer and Researcher, Sciences Po Paris, Director of World Sufficiency Lab
  • Moderation: Dr. Céline Cantat, CARE Program Manager, Sciences Po Paris

The roundtable is part of the CARE – World Sufficiency Lab Summer School on “Sufficiency in Practice” and is open to the public. It will be followed by a reception during which creative work on sufficiency by graduate and postgraduate students will be exhibited.
