CARE-Guelph Food Fight Now Underway

Last September, as part of the CARE 2026/2027 student opportunities, nineteen students from across the CARE consortium were selected to take part in the Guelph Food Fight, an immersive, scenario-based policy simulation organised by the Arrell Food Institute.

Think Model UN meets a role-playing game, played out across the global food system. At a time of climate instability, rising geopolitical tensions and mounting pressure on food systems, the initiative gives the next generation of leaders a space to imagine solutions, negotiate competing priorities and practise making difficult decisions.

With Dr. Evan Fraser acting as games master, participants took on the roles of different stakeholders - from governments to producers and other actors across the food system - and navigated unfolding scenarios designed to test their thinking on climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, food security and systems resilience.

The 1.5-day in-person event in Guelph marked the kick-off of a longer collaborative process. Students will now continue working together over six to eight weeks of online collaboration, developing policy recommendations and ultimately contributing to the Guelph Declaration, a collective vision for a more resilient food future.
