CALL FOR APPLICATIONS : CARE COLLABORATIVE COURSES AT U. OF GUELPH & U. OF TORONTO
Audit a winter semester CARE collaborative course at the University of Guelph or the University of Toronto.
Collaborative courses run from the week of Monday 5 January - Monday 6 April 2026.
Applications are open until Friday 5 December 2025 at 11pm.
1- EDRD*6100: Disaster Planning and Management at the University of Guelph.
This online course includes a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous material and will be taught by Dr. Nic Brunet , Associate Professor - Rural Planning & Development at the University of Guelph. Dr. Brunet has agreed to accept up to 5 students from participating CARE institutions. For any questions about this course please email Jeanna Rex at jeannar@uoguelph.ca
This course takes a multi-hazard perspective and is designed to challenge the students to examine the relationship between disaster and development, to learn how hazards become disasters, as well as the techniques for effective planning and managing disasters from a long-term development perspective.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Analyze the connections between the scientific basis of a disaster, the human dimensions, and the impact mitigation or risk reduction measures that could be applied
- Apply, through case studies of different disasters, planning tools and development concepts for understanding and reducing community vulnerability and enhancing community resilience
- Identify and use the concepts and analytical tools in disaster planning and management
- Examine the relationship between disasters and development
- Assess community vulnerability and enhancing people’s ability to withstand disruption and recover from disasters.
This course will use the following:
- Zoom as a video communication tool. A Webcam, a microphone to record video, and headphones/speakers to play back the recording are also needed.
- Accepted students from CARE institutions will be required to engage in the discussion forums to receive a CARE letter of completion.
- Accepted students from CARE institutions will be required to complete a course evaluation upon completion of the course.
2- PPG2014H: Topics in Public Policy: Climate Change Global Policy at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto
This online synchronous course is taught by Alex Wood and Jim Whitestone. They will accept 8 students from CARE partner institutions to audit the course. For any questions about this course, please email Anastasia Jakub at anastasia.jakub@utoronto.ca
- Class: Mondays, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm Toronto time (11pm-1am CET)
- Tutorial: Tuesdays, 1:00 pm-2:00 pm Toronto time (7-8pm CET)
Please note: students based in Paris are not required to attend the Monday class live due to the time difference. However, they must watch the class recording before the Tuesday tutorial to engage effectively.
This course provides a comprehensive understanding of climate change from scientific, policy, legal, economic, and financial perspectives. It examines the international frameworks developed to address climate change—such as the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement—and explores strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate impacts. Students will analyse the roles of national and subnational governments, civil society, Indigenous communities, and businesses in advancing the net-zero transition.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the science and global policy architecture of climate change.
- Evaluate legal, economic, and financial dimensions of climate action.
- Develop climate strategies for governments, NGOs, Indigenous groups, or industry.
- Critically assess obligations under international agreements and design practical solutions for mitigation and adaptation.
