Claire Mercier awarded CARE Scholarship at UofG’s School of Environmental Sciences

Claire Mercier will be completing her master’s in the School of Environmental Sciences under the supervision of Dr. Jackie Goordial. She has a B.Sc in Microbiology and Immunology focusing on environmental microbiology. Claire previously also completed a French Baccalaureate in Science, specializing in Earth and Life Sciences in Lycée Notre-Dame de Chartres. Her research focuses on how viruses that infect bacteria influence greenhouse gas emissions from thawing Arctic permafrost, a crucial part of global carbon storage. This research will help improve climate change prediction models.
After completing the MSc program, she hopes to join a research team focusing on polar ecosystems, which are among the least understood on the planet yet the most affected by climate change. She aims to guide global decision-making for climate adaptation and mitigation through the deepening of our understanding of ongoing and upcoming climate change.
